Data Governance and the Chief Risk Officer

Data Governance and the Chief Risk Officer

Last Thursday, I hosted a discussion on Data Governance and the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) with Rob Anarfi, Chief Risk Officer at Beazley, and Ross McGee, Head of Enterprise Risk Management at Apollo Group.

Rob described how he sees the data function as both a first-line and a partner to a risk function, like a “1b” in the three lines of defence model. He sees the data team as the bastions of what good data frameworks look like and what good data quality looks like, driving a good data culture through an organization.

As a CRO, he looks to the Chief Data Officer and their team to be the bastions of what good data frameworks and good data quality look like, driving a data culture throughout the organisation.

Ross agreed with Rob and explained that the Data Governance team set the standards - they tell the rest of the business what the field means; they define the structures in which we hold the data, and how users can then access the data.

He added that the data team really needs to realise that they are not there to inhibit, they are there to enable the business; and the business needs to realise that more.

I’ll be sharing more extracts from this session in future emails and posts - meanwhile the whole conversation is now up on the Datazed YouTube channel.

Voting time - what’s your opinion?

This vote is a continuation of last week’s, so don’t vote again if you did already. We’ve had some discussion on whether the name Data Governance generates impressions of a compliance or regulatory culture, which does not show value to the business and puts people off from participating.

Alternatively, you might view that names are not the concern - it’s about how you are working with your organisation.

Should the name be changed, and what would you choose?
